@mudpuppymama, got a question got you…

I was making liver water today, to make puppy formula to have on hand, “just in case”. Now I have a pound of cooked liver…. I hate to just throw it out, but I’M not gonna eat it!

I know that large quantities of liver are not good, and that too mauch at a time can throw off the apbalance of a diet. How much of this could I safely feed to my dogs daily, just to use it up? I figured you would know!

If the liver is from a ruminant animal, 2-3 percent of the diet. Otherwise, it can be fed up to 5 percent. Liver can cause loose stools if they are not used to it so you may want to start low! Ruminant animal liver is fed at a lower percentage because it is sky high in copper. All liver is high in vitamin A.

Liver is very healthy for humans too you know! I think you should save some for you!

It's beef liver. If it were cooked differently, I DO like liver. But not just boiled! LOL!

So if they get about 200 grams of food a day, that means only about 4 grams of liver! A REALLY tiny amount!!! We'll see how long it is worth measuring that amount out every day!!!

You could just feed it a few times a week and give bigger amounts. That is what I do. I balance their liver over the course of a week.

Boiled liver...ahh...I wouldn't like that either!

Oh, that would be OK? I was afraid that would give them loose stools...

My Scottie loved liver. I used to cook it in an iron skillet and chopped it up afterwards. It did not affect his stools at all, not even at the beginning. I used to add it to his kibble as a treat, but not every day or even every week. I imagine he would have loved it boiled too.

Liver is wonderful and very nutritious but is very high in vitamin A and ruminant liver is super high in copper. Fed in moderation whether weekly or occasionally or small amounts daily is healthy but fed in excess it can cause problems, especially if the diet already provides vitamin A and copper. Note that some dog food is higher than others in copper and copper storage problems are becoming more common among all breeds, even those not genetically inclined to it.

I knew there was some sort of problem with it. That's why I asked!
