I'm getting a second Hav puppy this weekend. We are taking Kodi with us to pick up the new little girl so they can have time together to get acquainted. Kodi is 13 mos old and loves other dogs, so I hope he likes one that's here to stay. Any hints on getting them socialized?

Just take your time dont rush it nice and slow keep in mind that its all new for the little puppy you are getting new smells new people new home it can be scary for little ones at first.I am sure they will work it all out on there own congradulation on your newest member of your family . How exciting I was so excited when I got Yoda I lost sleep couldnt eat I was a mess for the 4 days I waited on him.Now we are bestest friends and would not have it any other way.I do feed Yoda natural raw diet food .Boy what a difference from kibble . I cant find the madalions here in calif but this food is just squares chuncks Yoda dont care for the chicken but boy does he love the beef. I didnt care for the chicken either it smelled awfull so Yoda eats 3 times a day at 4 pieces at each feeding .Good luck and have loads of fun like i know you will

HI, I'm new to this forum and the proud owner of a little Havanese who is now
one year old. Barney is so playful and I think lonely, so I have been thinking of getting a playmate for him also. Would be interested in hearing how your puppy and the new one get along. I would get a female also and wonder if it
would be wise to get a little older dog, not a new puppy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially after you have some time to see them together. Will look forward to hearing how it goes.

Getting a second dog was the BEST thing I ever did. I know it sounds crazy, but its not. I waited until Goldie was over a year, which I think was good. I bonded with her and went through the puppy stage etc.... I got Stogie last Jan. when Goldie was 13 months.

They play all day every day. Sure there are days when they lay around, but they always play. I never have to worry if I leave her and go do things, they are ok together. Goldie is more dominant, ( of course a GIRL hehe) and Stogie is so laid back, so it works wonders.

I think they need friends, we can only play so much with them. Once you see them run - like - hell together and trick each other out of toys, its precious!

It also helped Goldie eat. She now finishes her food to keep him from getting it.

Irnfit I hope it works out for you. Im sure Kodi will love her. I think its good you are getting a girl, its nice to have one of each.

Elaine, if you decide to get another I think it would be great. You know they say Havs are addicting! I know Susan E. will have another before we know it!

Congratulations Irnfit on the new pup!!! I am so excited as I will be picking my new one up on Monday!! This is my third but I can agree with Melissa, that getting the second one was the best thing I could have done for Lily. They love each other, play all day & are great companions. I am getting a male for the 3rd since the females are a little dominent & I want to avoid issues. We got Lexi when Lily was 15 months old & she had no problem whatsoever accepting her! She was a little curious & fearful at first, but I followed the rules that, the pups already here come first with food, attention, and love in the beginning, as they "know it" and the baby doesn't - so we never had any problems. It will be interesting for us as Logan comes Monday and mine are 3 1/2 yrs old and 2 years old, so I hope that they are older doesn't mean a problem.

We got our first lil one and had her for a year while in grad school, before we started jobs, we decided to add our havanese. Our maltese literally ignored her for the first month. She didn't get mean with food, toys, but just would walk away when Dora would try to play with her. We were questioning our judgement and one day we came home and Belle walked right up to her barked at her and then chased her around. Now over a year later, they play together and sleep together. I highly recommend having more than one. It has also made Isabelle more happy. She truly gets to be more of a dog and do silly dog games with Dora. We dont have to constantly entertain her... actually she would rather play with Dora than me! I throw a toy, they retrieve it and it turns into tug of war or chase and catch, etc.

Congrats on your new family members!
Amanda (who is starting to try for another too!)

OH Melisa you are so right If I had the $$ I would be all over it.At times Yoda does seem lonely too I think it is best to have 2 if not more lOL If Yoda had it his way I would be playing with him all day.But then my work would never get done, I am hoping for next year on getting little female and yes they are sooooooo addicting that is for sure i can see having a ton of them running around good thing we have a limit on dog where I live .I told my husband if I get all black and white ones then nobody would know I can have a whole bunch of them not just 2 that is our limit here But I see us moving in 3-4 years hee hee enjoy your Havanese puppy when you get her they are great in numbers LOL

Thanks everone for all the positive vibes you have sent me about the new puppy. I've been telling Kodi we are getting him a new puppy, and he gives me that great Havanese head tilt - it is soooo cute! I'm sure it will be fine as I have always had 2 dogs, but it's been a long time since then. I'll keep you posted and send photos.

Congrats on your soon to be second additon and I agree with all the previous posters, it will be wonderfulf to have a playmate. I got my now 6 months old Hav Bugsy in September and already had two standard poodles and they all just love each other. They play, sleep and eat together all the time. As a matter of fact, I am sure Bugsy is convinced he is a standard poodle too. ;) He actually prefers to play with large dogs. I am dying to get another Hav, but DH won't even hear of it....sigh. We also have 2 elder persians three tanks of various fish and of course a couple of teenagers. But boy, do I want another Hav. I am soooo envious of all of you who are getting another dog. I guess I will just have to live vicarously through all of you until I can get another Hav.

Ejoy your new puppy,
Julia

Just got back from picking up the new puppy. She is even cuter than her pictures. The first night went great. It was a little awkward with Kodi for a while, but in about an hour, they were playing non-stop. We all slept together in the king size bed and she only got up once. The 4 hr ride home was great - she just slept (she got carsick on the ride to meet us). She has made herself right at home and is not afraid of the cats. No official name yet, but we are thinking of Shelby or Cassie. I'll post pics soon.
