Kodi, my first dog. My very special boy. My "Flying Swiffer". The little dog who tried everything for me and went everywhere with us, introducing me to the world of dog sports when the world was looking pretty dim after having to give up horse sports.

He climbed mountains, waded through streams, went kayaking and snowshoeing. He was best friends with a German Shepherd, but never knew a (friendly) dog or person that he DIDN'T like!

He was so good with puppies that until he got older (and a little grumpy) that he was asked to play with small breed puppies in puppy classes who had no playmates their own size. He was good with little kids, and was wonderful with elderly people in hospice.

Fly free my sweet boy.

So sorry to hear about your loss. We went from having an elderly dog with lots of health problems, to two puppies (soon to be three thanks to Sue at Havacasa Havanese here in Phoenix) that are ready to experience everything life has to offer. Sounds like Kodi had the best life any dog could hope for.

Dear Karen,

We were so sorry to hear that Kodi has left us. He was SUCH a special boy, providing inspiration to so many Havanese owners who got to know him here on the Forum. Thank you for all the photos, videos, stories, and lessons. We will never forgot dear Kodi.

I find it interesting that in the 40 posts above this one, there wasn't a mention of the Rainbow Bridge (unless I was reading too quickly and missed it). I didn't hear about the Rainbow Bridge until I joined Instagram in 2020. It seems like, on Instagram, it's almost all people talk about when a dog passes.

Below is the Rainbow Bridge poem from this website.

It does bring me great comfort to imagine all the dogs we have loved frolicking beyond the Rainbow Bridge. (Although I just realized I've never imagined any of my six childhood dogs there ...)

I hope the image of Kodi working his way through all the show rings beyond the Rainbow Bridge brings you some joy.

Much love to you and yours from Shama and her parents.

💚💛🧡💜💙

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Karen, it hurts my heart, to know that Kodi has passed on. I am so sorry, and think about him often. How old was he?
You made me cry again, Shamamama… but in a food way. Thank you. I do know about the Rainbow Bridge, and I am sure he is waiting there for me, along with my horse, Oliver, who left just a month before him! 💗

Karen, it hurts my heart, to know that Kodi has passed on. I am so sorry, and think about him often. How old was he?
He was 14, Sheri, old for a dog, maybe, but not that old for a Havanese. Didn’t you have problems with dementia type issues with Tucker in the end? Were they fairy sudden? I wonder if they and Kodi’s sudden onset loss of his senses have something to do with their long term auto-immune problems.

Looking back, at Christmas, he was still fine. I THINK he could still see when the puppies were born, though his vision has been limited for some time. He would still bring me toys to play fetch, I would just need to throw them a very short distance. That’s how fast this happened.

That was fast.

Yes, Tucker's eyesight was beginning to fail, but he was still able to see, just not as well. But, his anxiety was increasing, and he was showing considerable confusion at times, especially at night. I am sure he had dementia progressing fairly rapidly, and I couldn't bear to see the fear in him. He was 13 years 9 months.

I, too, think it likely that the auto-immune issues our sweet boys had were likely involved. I had read in the past that there seems to be a link between dogs with IBD/ immune system problems that were likely to contribute to dementia and/or other health problems.

Karen,
I’m so sorry about Kodi. Thank you for posting all the amazing pictures that show what a happy boy he was! He helped you in your time of need and transition and you built a great life together. I know your hearts are aching and there is a huge hole. Our time with our beloved dogs is always too short. May you find solace in your memories. I am so sorry for your loss. Robin and Astro

I am sorry for your loss. I’ve learned so much from reading about Kodi and his legacy lives on in my Toby whom I’ve tried to train like you do with your dogs.

Karen, We are so sorry to hear about Kodi. I always feel that these pups come to us from heaven. They give us support, unconditional love and teach us so much. All we're called on to do is take the best care of them. Job well done Karen! Run free again Kodi 🌈

I must say that seeing all you did with Kodi is a reminder of just how sturdy and athletic Havanese are, and how much they are capable of in life. If we can do half the things you did with Kodi, our pups will have had a great life.

In a way, I feel he was “one in a million”, and I do think he had an exceptional mind. But MANY Havanese can do the kind of things he did. They are “”doing dogs” if given the chance! Last night I was watching the rerun of the Westminster Toy Group, and as the Papillon came up, the announcer said something about, “this breed and the Toy Poodle” are the two toy breeds that you see involves in dog sports!” I wanted to jump through the TV and say, wait a darned minute and just LOOK at all the Havanese competing in obedience, rally and agility. I’d wager that the numbers are pretty close to the number of Paps at this point!

Havanese are CERTAINLY more than just a pretty face!

Karen -I am so sorry you have lost Kodi. Our little ones become such important members of our family - always our best friends, always ready to return the love we feel for them, always accepting of us and loving unconditionally. If only they could be with us for much, much longer. How fortunate he was to share in your life and how fortunate you have been to have him in your life.
