Support For Grieving Loss of Havanese

It seems that a good number of people have said goodbye to their beloved Havanese in the first five months of this year. I almost feel like the board should have a topic area for grieving owners. I, for one, would like to hear about the strategies that other people are using to process their grief. It really is harder than one would have thought.

Feel free to post or message me, if you have found successful methods for coping with this loss.

Not so crazy. Cali had a red throw she loved to sleep on on the couch. It’s nothing special, just a washable throw. Ollie started to chew on it one day and I took it off the couch because I didn’t want him damaging “Cali’s blanket“. I did give him another throw to sleep on but “Cali’s blanket” still hasn’t made it back on the couch.

PS, Hope it’s alright to post this picture here. Although she wasn’t a Havanese, I’m finding it cathartic to talk about Cali with people who, sadly, understand so well.

That is a beautiful picture. My sincere condolences for your loss.
One thing I really hate is people who say, “Get over it. S(he) was just a dog.” I encountered this attitude on one occasion after my poodle died. I no longer speak to that individual.

I still think about Coco Puff almost every day and it usually brings tears to my eyes, albeit less than at the beginning. My wife, who was a farm girl and grew up with that mindset, was completely changed by his passing in terms of how she views dogs. She held him as he died, and had nightmares and trouble sleeping for a while after. She is super close to our 2nd puppy (Luka) and doesn't hold back showing affection. I don't think she really realized the depth of her bond with Coco until he left us.

Don't let anyone minimize the grief. The vet who put him down was cracking jokes and showed zero empathy for our suffering. That really enraged my wife. Needless to say we will never set foot in that vet office again.

Thank you. I‘m pretty new to the forum so didn‘t get to know Boo like some of the others. I’ve really enjoyed following your posts on Boo’s favourite places. 😀 He was obviously a very loved little dog and you were so lucky to have him with you for so long. It doesn’t make his loss hurt any less though and I hope reliving his favourite places and times together is bringing you some peace.

Boo was a wonderful dog, and my best boy. Revisiting favorite places has been painful. However, I want to share his favorite places to keep his memory alive. Maybe, one day a forum member will visit one of the 20 places, remember Boo, and post about it. That would mean a lot to me. So stay tuned for my visits to the final 10 favorite places.

Two years ago I couldn't stop crying for weeks after losing our 15-year-old "little girl". Now I can't stop smiling when I think of bringing home our new puppy in 9 days! They steal our hearts 😍

My Dusty passed away March 31 and I still cry for him almost daily. It helped me to put a few of his ashes in a pendant and I wear the necklace close to my heart everyday.

A friend of mine lost her beloved in a similar manner - sudden. I would think that is part of your grieving - the ability to say good by with “one more”… BUT please do not second guess. You loved. You grieve. You cry. It’s your process.
