Tail down for the first time ever…

782 Views 34 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  LWalks
In Sydney’s entire 11 month life I have never seen her tail down. I guess a hysterectomy will do that to a girl. 😭poor sweet girl, was spay yesterday. She woke up at 2a whimpering. I carried her downstairs and laid her and her cone on my chest and we both slept til 7am. I even got a few kisses! But she is not liking the cone at all. And every time we take it off she does go for her wound.
1 day down, 13 to go. And she won’t be as sleepy. Wish us luck keeping our little acrobat quiet 🤣

It is a big surgery. Make sure you use the pain meds as directed.

I think, just because it is such a “common” surgery, we start to think that it’s not a big deal. It really is. That’s why it is important to follow the vet’s follow up directions. (Which I’m sure you intended to anyway, but many people treat very lightly)

I agree! People don’t think it’s a big deal. But it is pretty big! She is doing well though with confinement… for now. Time for more meds.
Hang in there Sydney and Missy. I hope the recovery goes well.

Poor baby! Hoping she feels better soon (but that you’re still able to keep her quiet— it’s tough w these exuberant girls!). It’s definitely a big surgery! I know she’s been a picky eater so I’ll be curious to see if her appetite changes in a few weeks as the hormones change… Jo went from totally uninterested in food to constantly ravenous!

Poor Sydney...agree it is a big deal and she feels it. Havanese tails are extremely expressive. Many dogs always have their tails down, but the movement from its usual over the back curl on a Havanese to hanging down is very noticeable. Having a tail like that means you cannot really hide how you are feeling!

She actually had been eating pretty well for the last two months. So far since surgery she is not really interested, which is not unexpected. But fingers crossed we don’t get back into bad habits over the two weeks. She needs food for her pain med, so if she doesn’t eat her food, she has been getting treats.

So true! My boy Cash had the most glorious tail, the tail itself was thick like a bigger dogs tail, but it also had thick and lush hair. It was usually down when he was just chillin (he was a very chill boy) but when he played it was like a glorious fountain!

That’s great that you’ve had progress on the eating front! We had to do the same post-spay, and I was really worried it was going to mess things up (she’d also started to eat better a few months pre-spay, but still didn’t eat a lot and was much pickier about what it was!) So I would try to feed her a couple of hours before she needed pain meds so that, if she refused, she wasn’t getting a treat immediately after refusing dinner. Turns out w the hormonal changes, I didn’t have anything to worry about— a couple months later, I was putting her on a diet! 😂

She is beautiful! My Lola will be spayed next month, is Sydney wearing a regular onesie or a surgery recovery one? What size did you get? Hope she recuperates fast poor baby!

A recovery one from Amazon. It’s a medium but it’s kind of big. Good luck with Lola’s spay.
Poor Sydney. She’s gone from ruling the roost around here to having to wear all this paraphernalia and spending more time in her pen. She has destroyed two donut collars. The first one I returned because I thought it was defective… but then I saw my genius escape artist deflate it and then push it off over her head. We are back to the cone. The meds help to sedate her. She does not appear to be in pain, she has jumped up on things before we could stop her… that’s when we know it’s pen time.

When Perry was recovering from his leg surgery he would try to jump even when I kept him tethered with a 4 foot leash (held shorter than that!) so I ended up having to carry him everywhere to prevent him from trying.

Thank goodness for trazadone! While it didn't stop the jumping attempts, it did keep him mellow enough to stop him from wanting to zoom around.

We have trazadone, gabapentin and the meloxydryl…And she is still a baby GOAT. We open her pen and she literally tries to buck out. Lol. Her sanctioned 10 minute walks help. And luckily she doesn’t mind being carried. She really hates the cone. But I can’t trust her without it. We have a bitenot collar coming tomorrow hopefully that will help. We used them on the boys and they were great. The one we have is too big for her.
The baby GOAT sleeps! Thank you medicinal cocktail! 💕🐾

That cocktail was a lifesaver for us too! Glad she’s finally chilled a bit— I feel like this is definitely one of those times where they absolutely have no idea what’s best for them!

Also, she looks adorable! Pretty sure we have that same onesie in a different color for Charlie.
