We picked up Luka on Thursday . It was a long drive home from Sacramento to Scottsdale where we live, and the weather was TERRIBLE.

Here are a few pics:

As you can see he is mostly gray/sable with some white and black mixed in.

We got him from Mary Lopez at Amor Havanese in Yuba city. She suffered a heart attack late last year and is having to sell some dogs she was planning on keeping. Of the 4 she was selling only one is left. He is absolutely gorgeous, and like Luka, comes from a long line of show champions. The reason we took Luka is because he is extremely friendly and outgoing while our current dog (Jasper) is more cautious and shy with new people.

When it comes to having two dogs, we are noobs. Any advice on introducing a new dog to your current dog? So far we've had to break up a few fights, but they were very affectionate this morning.

Congratulations on getting Luka, he's adorable! Mary is an awesome lady and breeder. Sorry to hear of her hear attack. She worked closely with Kimberly Gattley - Havtahava Havanese. My Phoenix is from Kimberly's last litter before she retired from breeding. Look forward to hearing how Luka and Jasper doing. Give them time and I'm sure they'll be sharing the same bed. :) :)

Congratulations! Glad you made it safely back home!

Do NOT allow fights between your two!!! Introductions should be with the puppy in an ex-pen and the older dog on the outside. Only when you are SURE they are getting alnong with the pne between them for a couple of days should you let them be together for short, supervised periods. Any time you cannot have EYES ON supervision, it is important to pen the puppy. The older dog could seriously hurt him. Eventually they will most likely be good friends, but not if you let them fight!

Congrats! He’s a cutie 🥰 I believe Mary was one of our breeder’s mentors, and her first breeding girl was from Amor (our Jolene’s grandma).

Our older Hav is super mellow but not a huge fan of puppies, so we were a little worried. We followed Karen’s advice and kept them separated by an x-pen with very short interactions loose, and he could always get away if he wanted. Of course with an 11-week old puppy, she spent most of her time in the x pen anyways, but I think that was key. Even as she started to earn more freedom, we always let him opt out. I’ll be honest— once he realized she wasn’t going anywhere, he was not a fan the first few months. But they are now wonderful friends, and very respectful of one another and take warning ‘leave me alone’ growls seriously. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. We will definitely supervise them carefully until we are sure there won't be any major dust-ups.

It's almost MORE important with an older puppy. An 11 week old puppy will still have "puppy license with any "normal" stable dog. That is not necessarily true with an older, 5 month old puppy.

Luka is adorable! Congrats! That was an awful lot of driving! Scout was 1.5 years old when Truffles arrived at eight weeks old. I wasn't sure if Scout would be happy with our addition. When we arrived home I placed her in the expen so she could relax, have dinner and to observe Scout's reaction. There was a lot of sniffing between the two of them. After the introduction she explored the downstairs with Scout following along. She has always been very independent and assertive from day one. Scout was his sweet self, but on guard for a few days. Poor Scout did put up with a lot of nipping and climbing all over him for quite some time. They are the best of friends, but Truffles has always been the alpha! If she growls at him he comes running to us! I'm sure Jasper and Luka will be best buddies soon! :)

There was a blizzard warning in Southern California! Some outlying areas got 6 feet of snow. Whatever snow there was in L.A. had melted by the time we got there in the evening.

Luka was a trooper. He slept most of the way, and peed whenever I found a secluded spot for him to do so. He didn't get car sick either.

I'm sure he misses the dogs and people he was with for the first 5 months of his life, however he is adjusting very well. He has an amazing confident and outgoing personality. We are lucky to have him.
I took him for a walk today and he was a natural. If I take him out every 3 hours or so, he does his business outside like clockwork.
The two dogs are still testing each other which will result in some hard boundaries over time I hope. Luka is smaller than Jasper by a few pounds but still wins his share of toy tug-of-wars! Luka is actually only a few weeks younger than Jasper.

He definitely knows how to relax. He tuckered himself out playing in the rain with Jasper and will be getting a thorough brushing later.

I don’t live in the desert, but we have hot air heat in our house, which sucks the humidity out of the air. I use Chris Christensen Spectrum 10 conditioner almost exclusively.
