Clipping Under Eyes

I have never clipped under Ollie’s eyes. He has very bad tear stains and nothing I’ve tried has made any difference. I’ve accepted them, but the hair under his eyes is getting hard to maintain. The tears run down into his beard and make a bit of a gummy mess. They’re probably combining with the grease in his beard from his food. Yuck….I could easily shampoo his face every day!

I wipe under each eye every day and then comb out the crusties but it’s hard to get the comb all the way to the end. I hold the hair at the base but it is a delicate area and I feel so badly when I inadvertently pull. I’m seriously considering getting the hair under is eyes clipped next time I get him groomed but it's been drummed into me to never cut the hair under a Havanese’s eyes.

For those of you who clip under the eyes, would you say it’s made a huge difference in keeping the area clean and dry? I’m not worried about the hair growing and poking his eyes because I’ve got my own clippers and am very comfortable clipping around eyes to maintain it.

I can't really answer the question but if you are getting him groomed regularly and can keep them clipped short I don't think there's a major problem in doing it. I personally don't because Perry only sees his US groomer once or twice a year and I do the clipping in between - and I personally am not comfortable clipping it myself so don't want it done only occasionally since that would mean it growing out and poking him in the eyes in between.

I always had Scout's eye area trimmed. Truffles has never been trimmed. It was so much easier to keep the area clean when trimmed. I rarely had to clean the corners of Scout's eyes. Truffles eye area needs cleaning every day. When Scout suddenly developed staining I tried everything. When I changed their diet to Nom Nom his staining completely cleared up, but it did take a few months to finally trim off all the stain.

Mine eat fresh and raw diets and I do pop them in the sink after a meal and wash their beards. I also use a face and feet comb (Chris Christensen) to remove any eye crud morning and evening. They get use to it and it only takes a few minutes. Keeps their faces cleaner. Diet does play a significant role in eye stains so trying different diets may help you find one that works. It would require a few weeks on any new diet to give it time to see if it would be effective on Ollie’s tear stains.
